“Speciated hydrocarbons in exhaust emissions of a Proconve L8 flex fuel vehicle using E22 gasohol and hydrated ethanol”.

 In this study, the hydrocarbon profiles in the gaseous emissions of a Proconve L8 phase flex-fuel vehicle are presented using hydrated ethanol and reference gasoline containing 22% by volume of anhydrous ethanol (E22). Hydrocarbon speciation is necessary for the determination of Maximum Incremental Reactivity (MIR) coefficients, which are applied in the calculation of NMOG (non-methane organic gases) emissions. NMOGs are regulated in Brazil by Proconve due to their role as precursors in tropospheric ozone formation. The speciation of compounds in the C2 to C12 range was performed using a gas chromatography system coupled to a mass spectrometer, calibrated with a standard gas recommended by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), based on samples of gaseous emissions collected in inert metal spheres. A vehicle equipped with a 1.0L turbocharged engine and direct fuel injection (GDI) was evaluated under the urban driving cycle (NBR-6601). The results were consistent with previous Petrobras studies on Proconve L4 to L7 vehicles, showing the presence of typical gasoline combustion compounds in the E22 tests, and elevated levels of C2 compounds (ethene, ethane, and ethyne) when using hydrated ethanol.
